The battle of the “Divas”… Who is the true “Queen”? Madonna v. Mariah…
Im also gonna touch on Celine, Britney and Janet to help with comparisons. And forget the past, lets look at how they stack up head to head TODAY!

Each of the above artists has a new album out.. Britney’s came out first on 30 Oct 2007, then Celine, Janet, Mariah and most recently Madonna a month ago on 29 April 2008. Let’s look at their worldwide sales (Twist: Weekly sales only count if they make the top 40 albums worldwide for that week):

Britney Spears - Blackout
Released: 29 weeks ago.
Sales whilst in top 40: 1,300,000
Ave sales per week: 44,828

Celine - Taking Chances
Released: 27 weeks ago
Sales whilst in top 40: 2,500,000
Ave sales per week: 92,593

Janet - Discipline
Released: 11 weeks ago
Sales whilst in top 40: 475,000
Ave sales per week: 43,182

Mariah Carey - E=MC²
Released: 5 weeks ago
Sales whilst in top 40: 1,319,000
Ave sales per week: 263,800

Madonna - Hardy Candy
Released: 3 weeks ago
Sales whilst in top 40: 1,384,000
Ave sales per week: 461,333

It is VERY important to remember that the majority of sales will come in the first month. Madonna and Mariah have superior averages because their albums haven’t yet suffered from a sales fade. The clear winner on sales so far is Celine Dion, who has sold over 2.5 million copies of her new album. Janet Jackson is in an obvious last place with around half a million sales.

In the coming weeks and months the “Diva Wars” as I shall call them will concentrate solely on the age-old battle for “Queen of Pop” between Madonna and Mariah. With their albums equally anticipated, released only 2 weeks apart, and both of their lead singles topping the charts in numerous countries, this is the key battle of 2008 in the world of Divas. They are currently equal on world sales, with Mariah the clear leader in the USA. Can Madonna pull further ahead in coming weeks? Will Mariah’s sales continue to drop? Who will be take the lead, and their crown, as the “Queen of Pop”?

Stay tuned to see the battle as it unfolds!
